Calvin
Bobbie Lutz, August 2006: We had to put Calvin to sleep a couple weeks ago. He was diagnosed with a nerve shaft tumor, which left his right leg useless and was starting to affect his other front leg. He was 11. He was my second whippet and first Champion & Dual Champion. He earned his last title in April --Open Jumpers Preferred agility title -- and was still lure coursing up through June.
The vet made a comment that we had done more for him than most people would have (he was referring to the MRI and specialists we saw about this problem). My reply was that he did a lot for us, as evidenced by the 15 titles in his name.
I thought I’d highlight some of his accomplishments as a sort of memorial to him:
His conformation career was launched when he took a 2nd in the 9-12 mo. class of 20 at the ’96 American Whippet Club (AWC) National. He had the famous Sporting Fields Kinsman, Alerek’s Celebrity, and Morshor’s Majestic Dell in this pedigree. The year he turned 2, he finished his AKC bench championship and AKC lure coursing field title (becoming a Dual Champion), and also earned his first LCM in ASFA.
He earned a UKC Grand Championship in Sept ’05. From 2002 through 2004, he was in the top 10 in UKC conformation. He won Best of Breed at the final top 10 "elimination competition" at the UKC Premier in June ’03.
He had a Best in Field in both AKC and ASFA, with multiple Best of Breeds in both lure-coursing organizations. He was #1 in AKC lure coursing most of ’97, although he ended up tied for 3rd place the last month of that year. He was in the top 5% of ASFA for ’96 through ‘98 (with over 900 hounds running). After breaking a bone in his rear foot at the AWC Natl’ the year before, he came back to win overall field champ (of 5 stakes) and a 6th place in the Triathlon at the 2000 Whippet National. The Triathlon is made up of the scores from lure coursing, agility and/or obedience, and a special conformation class. His coursing career is rounded out with a Master Courser title in ‘00, an LCM3 in Dec.’03, Veteran Field Ch in ‘04, and ½ of the requirements for Vet-LCM.
Although his obedience career wasn’t as illustrious as his coursing career, he did earn a CD in both AKC and UKC.
His agility career included a UAGII from UKC just two years ago. He earned the Novice agility titles from AKC as well as his last title, Open Jumpers Preferred in April ’06, with placements. He also earned highest scoring combined standard/jumpers in the agility trial at the ’04 Whippet National.
In other highlights of his life, he was pictured at least three times in the AKC Gazette from ’96 to’98 to illustrate articles. The Oct.’98 issue (photo by Steve Surfman) prominently featured him flying across two pages to illustrate an article on structure and movement. He’s also pictured on page 454 in Denise Como’s book, "Sighthounds Afield" with a photo that had earned the photographer (Robert Dequinze) a $500 photo contest prize.
His biggest accomplishments are his Champion Award of Versatility Excellent from the AWC in ‘01 and taking first place in the 2004 Whippet Nat'l Triathlon 2 ½ mo. shy of 9 years old, in addition to the fact that he will live on in his kids from 4 litters by 3 lovely bitches.
